Termination of a marriage occurs, among other things, by divorce, that is, a legal procedure with a ruling by the judge. The procedure can be initiated at the request of one of the spouses or both.

A divorce petition will only be granted if there is a permanent breakdown of the marriage. The law does not further define the concept of permanent breakdown. The judge will determine whether this is the case. Some situations that fall under this are: adultery, malicious abandonment and serious injury or abuse.
