I took out a loan in 2019 on behalf of a friend, and they have since reneged on the verbal agreement we had. Nothing was written in the paper trail; however, I have been receiving email notices from the bank regarding the loan. Payments on the loan were suspended during COVID. However, because of this loan, I know my credit has been affected. The loan's end date would have been 2025. What can i do or what steps can i take to get this off my credit

Thank you for reaching out. Given the situation, it's important to know that verbal agreements, while valid, can be difficult to enforce without written documentation. However, since you're receiving notices from the bank and are concerned about the impact on your credit, it may be beneficial to start by reviewing the loan agreement itself. If you were a co-signer or guarantor on the loan, your credit could indeed be affected. To address this, you could contact the bank to explain the situation and request a resolution, possibly negotiating a payment arrangement or discussing how the loan's impact on your credit can be alleviated. If you’re seeking to remove the loan from your credit report, you might want to file a dispute with the credit bureaus if there are any inaccuracies. If your friend refuses to take responsibility, you may need counsel to explore options like small claims court or other legal actions to recover any funds or resolve the issue.

Sincerely,
