Each of us has a name and an identity, is related, is an adult or a minor, can rent or buy a house, is responsible for the people and things in our care, could receive property as an inheritance, etc.

Civil law is very broad since it concerns us as individuals or citizens from birth to death. It will govern our rights and obligations, as private individuals, throughout our existence. (See also: legal personality and marriage contract.)

The Civil Code, which is the set of regulations relating to civil law, therefore gives us rights and obligations.

For most of us, we live in perfect harmony respecting these rights and obligations.

But it may happen that voluntarily or involuntarily we are not able to meet our civil obligations. For example, by damaging another person's property. In this case we have committed what is called a fault in law. And the other person has suffered damage.

Reparation most often consists of financially compensating for the loss suffered.

Alternative dispute resolution methods are practices placed in relation to the systems put in place by states and governments involving both a legal and judicial settlement of a dispute.

Criminal law is the branch of law that determines offences, the sanctions that society imposes on those who commit these offences and the preventive measures as well as the methods of repression of the facts constituting offences.

Criminal law must comply with the principle of legality.  "The legislator is required by Article 34 of the Constitution, as well as by the principle of legality of offences and penalties resulting from Article 8 of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789, to determine the scope of application of criminal law and to define crimes and offences in sufficiently clear and precise terms" Constitutional Council, QPC, No. 2012-240, 4 May 2012;

Criminal law must also comply with the principles of non-retroactivity of harsher criminal law and retroactivity of milder criminal law.

The provisions of French criminal law are contained in the Penal Code.

The general rules of criminal law are covered by general criminal law. The specific rules concerning offences are covered by special criminal law.
