The Estonian Bar Association (Eesti Advokatuur), established on June 14, 1919, is a self-governing professional association dedicated to organizing the provision of legal services in both private and public interests, while safeguarding the professional rights of attorneys. Operating through its various bodies-including the General Assembly, the Board, the President, the Audit Committee, the Ethics Tribunal, and the Admissions and Aptitude Assessment Committee-the association ensures the integrity and quality of legal practice in Estonia. With a membership exceeding 1,100 legal professionals, the Estonian Bar Association comprises attorneys-at-law and assistant attorneys-at-law who have successfully passed rigorous qualification exams, demonstrating their suitability through education, knowledge, and personal characteristics. The association actively participates in legislative drafting, organizes professional in-service training for attorneys, and maintains relations with various legal entities and organizations, both locally and internationally. Notably, it has been a member of the International Bar Association since 1992 and joined the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe in 2004. Committed to upholding the rule of law, the Estonian Bar Association emphasizes the independence and professionalism of its members. Attorneys within the association are entrusted with extensive rights to gather information and evidence, ensuring the confidentiality of client relationships and the immunity of advocates. This framework enables them to provide comprehensive legal services, including representation and defense in criminal, civil, and administrative matters, as well as participation in the drafting of legal acts and negotiations, thereby contributing significantly to the Estonian legal system.
