As an Associate Attorney, you will manage corporate matters and litigation cases either as a lead attorney or in support of senior staff, typically working under the supervision of the Firm’s Partners and Senior Associates. You will perform legal research and draft petitions for cases, develop agreements, negotiate contracts, settle claims and advocate for clients in or out of court. You will be expected to work in a wide range of practice areas, spanning across the firm’s primary practice areas of corporate, family, real estate and intellectual property law.

At GPS, we look for and hire future partners, not employees. We set no timetable or hierarchy for associate responsibility—except to increase the challenge steadily to enable each attorney to expand his or her skill set. The type of work assigned to associates is limited only by their desire and capabilities. 

Associates must have successfully attained at least a Bachelors or J.D. in law, must have attained their law licence and have five or more years’ prior exemplary experience in a law firm or corporate legal department. You must be fluent in English and have excellent analytical, communication, diplomacy, legal research and writing skills. You must be able to communicate legal matters clearly and concisely to foreign clients and management.

Experience and Attributes:

  • Thai national ONLY
  • Minimum Bachelor Degree or Juris Doctor in Law;
  • Five to seven years' relevant experience within a law firm or as in-house legal counsel;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • The ability to communicate legal issues clearly and effectively to clients at a senior level;
  • Able to demonstrate high levels of initiative and motivation;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, demonstrating professionalism in all dealings with other team members;
  • Excellent leadership and management skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Must be able to multi-task and keep calm under pressure;
  • The flexibility to work outside normal office hours will be required from time-to-time

Associate Attorney Duties and Responsibilities 

To be successful in their role, Associate Attorneys must also perform the following tasks:

Client Relations

  • Consistently provide a high level of service to all the Firm’s clients;
  • Deal sympathetically and appropriately with clients and exhibit empathy;
  • Create and uphold good rapport with the firm’s clients, gaining and keeping their confidence;
  • Receive requests for legal advice and decide on the most appropriate responses;
  • Establish what needs to be done to solve a client’s problems;
  • Provide sound, well researched and accurate advice and reports;
  • Attend and represent the Firm at client meetings;
  • Draw up contracts and other legal documents;
  • Maintain regular communications in relation to client matters;
  • Explain complex legal proceedings and concepts in a clear and concise manner to a satisfactory degree of understanding;
  • Represent clients in Court when and where required.

Professional Standard

  • Demonstrate professionalism in all dealings to the highest standards of the profession;
  • Comply with the Firm’s policies and procedures, professional standards and any requirement set by the Lawyers’ Council of Thailand;
  • Perform duties given by senior staff efficiently, faithfully and diligently;
  • Manage multiple assigned tasks in an assertive, efficient and timely manner;
  • Maintain a high degree of attention to detail;
  • Keep calm under pressure;
  • Participate in the growth and development of the Firm;
  • Treat all information about the Firm, its clients and their business as wholly confidential;
  • Keep up to date with local law and practices;
  • Recognize the opportunity to attract additional business from existing clients;
  • Record all chargeable hours in the company’s law practice management software or as otherwise directed.

  • Support internal procedures and systems of the Firm including but not limited to file and case management, time and disbursement recording, and expense recording and reimbursement;
  • Always be respectful to the Firm’s Partners, staff and clients and in turn earn the respect of the Firm and its clients;
  • Participate and engage in meetings as required;
  • Attend internal training and external training as and when required;
  • Read journals and attend courses as part of continuing professional development (CPD);
  • Maintain high standards of professional conduct at all times;

  • Maintain an understanding of and commitment to the Firm’s values and ethos;
  • Demonstrate high levels of initiative and motivation, while working closely with other team members.

Technical Ability

  • Manage multiple matters either as a lead attorney or in support of senior staff, typically working under the supervision of the Firm’s Partners and Senior Associates;
  • Perform extensive legal research into relevant laws and regulations, advocate for clients in or out of court in settlement of claims, plan and present arguments and counter-arguments through petitions and standing before the court;
  • Draft, interpret and negotiate contracts and legal documents, and oversee compliance to these documents;.

Strategic and Commercial Awareness

  • Be familiar with the Firm’s stated goals and strategies;
  • Remain knowledgeable and engaged about the legal market, threats and opportunities the Firm faces, and the future plans for the Firm and your role in those plans.
