Residence visa for a child who was adopted by a single female adopter

Dear Sir / Madam, I hope you can help me with my query. My daughter was adopted around 6 years ago, from England. I was supported by Scottish Adoption Services in Edinburgh at the time as I am from Scotland. My daughter and I moved out to Abu Dhabi on the 19th of February as I had accepted a job out there. She was meant to be sponsored under my own employment visa for Abu Dhabi, however, there have been a number of challenges that we've faced over the past couple of weeks. I'll try and note below some of the issues that have come up so that it makes sense, as it has all been quite difficult for us. The UAE does not recognize single female adapters. They advised that they require the names of a mother and a father. They need a person to be married to adopt. I will need this information or help as soon as possible too as they are trying to process the visa application and the clock is ticking for us in terms of my daughter's length of stay remaining here and how long the process here takes to complete residence visa applications. Thank you so much. I really appreciate any support you can give. Kind regards Naheed

If your son has a Golden Visa, he may sponsor his parents — but requirements can vary depending on family status and documentation. If only one parent is applying, authorities may request supporting documents or consent, especially if the other spouse is not applying. In the UAE, immigration and personal status rules can create challenges when sponsoring a child adopted abroad, especially where the adoption was granted to a single parent. The UAE does not recognize adoption in the Western legal sense; instead, it recognizes guardianship (kafala) arrangements. This can create documentation requirements when applying for a residence visa.

Why the issue arises
Authorities often require proof of legal parentage. Because UAE law emphasizes lineage, systems may expect details of both parents unless guardianship documentation is clearly established.

Possible solutions
- Submit the UK adoption order and full legal documentation showing you are the child’s lawful parent/guardian.
- Provide a legalized guardianship/adoption certificate attested by:
- UK authorities
- UAE Embassy in the UK
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)
- Provide a sworn affidavit confirming sole parental responsibility.
- Submit a letter from the Scottish Adoption Authority confirming the legal adoption.

Additional documents that may help
- Child’s birth certificate and adoption decree
- Proof of sole custody and parental rights
- No-objection or “father unknown/not applicable” legal declaration (if required)
- School records and medical insurance coverage

Important: Many cases are approved once properly attested legal guardianship documents are submitted and clarified.

Because immigration officers may require specific attestations or legal clarification, prompt professional assistance can help avoid visa delays or overstay penalties.

HHS Lawyers can assist with document legalization, immigration submissions, and liaising with authorities to help secure your child’s residence visa.
