Uganda Law Council

The Uganda Law Council serves as the principal regulatory authority overseeing the legal profession and legal aid service providers in Uganda. Its mandate includes conducting pre-entry examinations for aspiring legal practitioners, inspecting law chambers to ensure compliance with established standards, and accrediting universities offering law degree programs. Additionally, the Council evaluates foreign legal qualifications and monitors continuing legal education to uphold the profession's integrity. In its disciplinary role, the Council processes complaints against advocates, ensuring timely notifications and hearings, with rulings delivered within six months. It also oversees legal aid services by inspecting providers' premises, issuing certificates of approval, and publishing annual reports on their status. Furthermore, the Council mandates that every advocate provides 40 hours of pro bono services annually to indigent individuals, reinforcing its commitment to accessible justice. Through these comprehensive functions, the Uganda Law Council upholds constitutionalism, the rule of law, and due process within the country's legal framework.
