I hope you are doing well.
I am writing to explore what options may be available given my parents’ current situation. They are Iranian nationals and initially traveled to Helsinki on a tourist visa following an invitation from my brother, who is a Finnish citizen. After their visit, they are now staying with me in Sweden.
The situation in Iran is currently very complex and poses significant risks. Their visa is valid until mid-February; however, there are currently no available flights, and even if the situation in Iran were to change, it would feel highly unsafe to send them back. All of their children are here, and they no longer have any parents or siblings remaining in Iran.
I would very much appreciate the opportunity to discuss whether there are any possibilities for them to remain beyond their current visa, or whether there may be alternative pathways for obtaining a residence permit that could be applicable in our case.
Please let me know if this is something you are able to assist with, and if so, how we might proceed.
Thank you very much in advance for your time and support.
Kind regards,

Thank you for reaching out and for explaining your parents’ situation. In Sweden, short-stay (Schengen) visas generally cannot be extended beyond their validity except in very limited circumstances. The lack of available flights alone is usually not sufficient, but broader safety concerns may be relevant. Your parents may need to contact the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) before their visa expires to inquire about a possible temporary extension or to receive guidance on lawful next steps.
Longer-term options, such as applying for a residence permit, are more complex. Family reunification for parents is quite restricted under Swedish law and typically requires strong dependency factors. Asylum may be an option if your parents have an individual and well-founded fear of persecution or serious harm if returned to Iran, but this is a significant legal step that should be carefully evaluated. Given the risks of overstaying a visa and the potential long-term consequences, I strongly recommend a consultation as soon as possible to assess the safest and most appropriate path forward.
Sincerely,
