Long-stay employment visa
Standard fee: EUR 300
The long-stay (D) visa fee is EUR 300. Citizens of Ukraine are exempt from long-stay visa fees. [11]

Standard charges: RON 265 + EUR 120
The residence permit charges are RON 265 for the document and the RON equivalent of EUR 120 as the consular fee. [12]

From a work visa to a residence permit

  1. Check the route and current suspension

    D/AM2 single-application submissions are temporarily disabled, along with employer registration and authorisation flows. D/AM1 is intended mainly for highly qualified workers. [2] [6]

  2. Read the employment contract before signing

    Review the job, pay, hours and any accommodation offered. The employment contract must be signed in Romanian and in your language or an international language you understand. [1] [6]

  3. Have the single application submitted

    Where available, D/AM1 applications are submitted by the employer in Romania, registered in RAS. D/AM2 hiring generally uses an authorised placement agency; by exception, an authorised employer may submit the single application. Submission is exclusively online through WorkinRomania. [6]

  4. Attend the consular visa appointment

    After approval, appear at the Romanian embassy or consulate in your country of origin or residence. Present your original border-crossing document and necessary supporting documents. [6] [5]

  5. Apply for residence permission after arrival

    For continued work residence, apply personally to your county immigration office for a single permit or EU Blue Card. Submit at least 30 days before your visa-granted stay expires. [3]

Common questions

Can I change employer by resigning soon after arrival?

A foreign worker may change employer by resignation after at least six months from starting work in Romania with the previous employer, as registered in REGES-ONLINE. This period may be reduced in duly justified cases of serious breach by the employer of contractual clauses or employment relations. [8]

How long can I stay if my employment ends?

For an EU Blue Card holder whose employment ends, the right of stay remains valid until the granted period expires, but no longer than the period during which unemployment benefit is received or, if no unemployment benefit is received, 90 days after employment ends. [8]

Can I work using a student residence permit?

A foreign student holding temporary residence for studies can work without an employment permit under a part-time contract of no more than six hours a day. [9]

What deadline applies after a visa refusal?

Lodge the mandatory preliminary complaint within 30 days of receiving the refusal. A later court appeal must normally be filed within six months of the complaint response or the response deadline, and no later than one year after notification of the refusal. [5]
