Significant Legal Developments Concerning US Election Laws and Voting Rights

Two notable election law developments occurred in the US in March 2025. Firstly, the US Supreme Court heard arguments challenging Louisiana's redrawn congressional map, specifically focusing on whether the configuration of its two Black-majority districts constitutes racial gerrymandering, violating the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black voting power.

Secondly, the Republican Party formally asked the Supreme Court to overturn precedent upholding federal limits on how much money political parties can spend in coordination with candidates, arguing these limits under the Federal Election Campaign Act violate the First Amendment. A ruling overturning this could drastically alter US campaign finance.
