UN Experts Demand Release of Baloch Human Rights Activists in Pakistan
Last Updated: Apr 18, 2025

Over a dozen UN human rights experts issued a statement in March 2025 demanding that Pakistan immediately release detained Baloch human rights defenders, including prominent advocate Mahrang Baloch, and cease its crackdown on peaceful protests.
The experts cited escalating police actions against the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) following a separatist attack earlier in the month. Activists protesting enforced disappearances were arrested, with some reportedly facing terrorism and sedition charges. The UN experts condemned the use of excessive force and denial of access to counsel, urging authorities not to misuse counter-terrorism measures against defenders. Pakistan's foreign ministry responded cautiously, stating the UN release seemed based on unverified media reports.
