Vera C. Rubin Observatory to Reveal First Images of Unseen Cosmos
Last Updated: Jul 16, 2025

The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory is scheduled to release its first official images to the public on June 23, 2025. Equipped with the world's largest digital camera, the Chile-based observatory will embark on a 10-year mission, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), to create an unprecedentedly detailed "movie" of the southern sky.
This survey aims to chronicle trillions of cosmic objects and events by repeatedly scanning the sky every few nights, providing vast amounts of data to help scientists probe the fundamental mysteries of the universe, including dark matter and dark energy. The observatory will also play a crucial role in mapping the Milky Way and identifying millions of potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids.
