About office

Voetnoot Advocatuur was founded in 2020 by Ewout Jansen . As a lawyer, Ewout Jansen specializes in IP law, corporate law and procedural law. At the Supreme Court and at several Utrecht law firms (Wijn & Stael and LEAN LAWYERS), Ewout generally advised on contract law, corporate law, insolvency, tenancy law, copyright/IP, employment law, cassations, media law and areas bordering on administrative law. Ewout can advise with great confidence - from an internal perspective - on what will or will not happen with a case. Footnote Advocatuur is hosted by Advocatuur van Haren. Ewout obtained his doctorate in Dutch Law (learning path information law) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) with a thesis on 'stealing jokes' (grade: 9). Between 2004 and 2009 Ewout won 12 cabaret prizes with the duo Ewout & Etienne. He stopped telling jokes for money to advise at the Supreme Court as a research assistant/court auditor.

Between 2009 and 2016, Ewout mainly wrote complex advice (conclusions) in which analyzes are made of legislative history, literature and case law. In this way, he not only developed procedural law experience from the cassation technique, but he also acquired substantive specialist knowledge of virtually all sub-areas of civil law. Ewout Jansen provides comedy at the Sunday Assembly in Amsterdam (De Balie) & Utrecht (Tivoli) and participates in the Cutting Table (ex VPRO/De Correspondent) of Kasper C. Jansen. Ewout is a member of the Appeals Board of the Advertising Code Committee and occasionally writes ( Advocatie , NJB & Boek9 ).

In 2021 Ewout won the Local Pleading Competitions of the Young Bar Central Netherlands.

Footnote Advocatuur is regularly supported by a small team of independent lawyers.

Vision

"The name of the office is a nod to my CV and the modest structure and size of the company. Yet the name also shows self-awareness and substance. At the Supreme Court I have gained a lot of experience in correctly substantiating legal positions on the basis of case law, literature and legislative history. I think it is precisely because of this substantive “theoretical” angle that I have an excellent track record in practical terms when it comes to the proceedings in which I have been involved. I have also been able to reach successful settlements on a regular basis. The name is also distinctive in the legal profession, because it is not an old-fashioned reference to a fancy-sounding surname from days gone by, but says something about the vision of the company. In my opinion, the legal profession too easily pretends that “practical” “simple solutions” should be “thought along with entrepreneurs”, while lawyers must first and foremost do their own (home)work. In the event of a legal dispute, it may be (precisely) important that the decisive sources of law are correctly designated at an early stage. After all, this can prevent endless discussions.

Fortunately, there are many exceptions, but too often the substantiation of summonses and procedural documents does not meet the requirements. In the case law, at least, people are not always enthusiastic about the degree of substantiation that is provided by (experienced) lawyers. Substantiating positions with correct footnotes is associated in the legal profession with years of litigation or even with useless study room learning. However, my experience is that, especially during a negotiation, the timely – short and clear – designation of a few comparable court cases can bring parties back to the table. Whoever is confronted with a court decision in a dispute, which has been rendered under contextually very similar circumstances, in which the court awards high compensation, for example, is logically more likely to make a proposal to settle the matter than to make a blatantly unsubstantiated assertion. The office has modest commercial objectives so that you can actually be helped for a competitive rate" (See:mr. Magazine & Book9 ).
