My lawyer in Cyprus won’t share my file or explain fees—how do I complain and get my documents back?

I’ve asked my lawyer several times for a copy of my case file and a breakdown of the invoices, but they keep delaying. I’m worried they’re charging for work they didn’t do and I may need to change lawyers quickly. What is the proper complaint process in Cyprus and can I force the return of my documents?

Yes. In Cyprus, this is usually handled on two separate tracks: a conduct and service complaint, and a fee dispute. The Cyprus Bar Association states that complaints about an advocate’s services or conduct are made by written complaint to the Disciplinary Board, and its public guidance currently lists the Disciplinary Board’s office in Nicosia together with a filing fee of EUR 68. The disciplinary framework can lead to sanctions ranging from a warning or reprimand to suspension or even removal from the roll in serious cases.

On fees, you are entitled to ask for a proper breakdown. Cyprus guidance states that an advocate must furnish a bill of costs showing in detail the services rendered, the payments made on the client’s behalf, and the sums received from or for the client. If the bill is disputed, the amount can be challenged before the Registrar of the court where the proceedings took place, and excessive-fee complaints may also be raised through the Cyprus Bar route.

As for your documents, the professional rules are stronger than many clients realise. Client funds must be available on demand, records of transactions with client funds must be handed over when requested, and any money or other client property held by the advocate for the client must be handed over as soon as possible. In practical terms, you should send one final written demand immediately, giving a short deadline and asking for: the full electronic case file, return of all original documents, an itemised bill of costs, a ledger of client money received and spent, and written confirmation of any upcoming deadlines. At the same time, if there is any live court matter, appoint replacement counsel without delay, because a complaint does not stop procedural time limits.

If they still refuse after a final written demand, the next step is usually to have new Cyprus counsel send the demand formally and file the complaint in parallel. That is normally the fastest way to secure the file, protect deadlines, and put the fee issue under immediate pressure.
