My lawyer in Cyprus won’t share my file or explain fees—how do I complain and get my documents back?

On fees, you are entitled to ask for a proper breakdown. Cyprus guidance states that an advocate must furnish a bill of costs showing in detail the services rendered, the payments made on the client’s behalf, and the sums received from or for the client. If the bill is disputed, the amount can be challenged before the Registrar of the court where the proceedings took place, and excessive-fee complaints may also be raised through the Cyprus Bar route.
As for your documents, the professional rules are stronger than many clients realise. Client funds must be available on demand, records of transactions with client funds must be handed over when requested, and any money or other client property held by the advocate for the client must be handed over as soon as possible. In practical terms, you should send one final written demand immediately, giving a short deadline and asking for: the full electronic case file, return of all original documents, an itemised bill of costs, a ledger of client money received and spent, and written confirmation of any upcoming deadlines. At the same time, if there is any live court matter, appoint replacement counsel without delay, because a complaint does not stop procedural time limits.
If they still refuse after a final written demand, the next step is usually to have new Cyprus counsel send the demand formally and file the complaint in parallel. That is normally the fastest way to secure the file, protect deadlines, and put the fee issue under immediate pressure.
