I lost a civil case in Athens but I was in hospital when the decision was served and I missed the appeal deadline. Is there a way to restore the time limit and still file an appeal, and what evidence do I need to show?

Yes, under Greek Code of Civil Procedure, generally, you can request restoration of the missed appeal deadline (restitutio in integrum) due to hospitalisation, if it qualifies as force majeure. This is governed by Articles 152–158 GCCP. You must prove that force majeure (an objective, unforeseeable event that made compliance with the deadline impossible, even with utmost diligence) prevented you from filing the appeal. Fault of your lawyer or legal representative usually does NOT count as force majeure. You must file a special application for restoration within 30 days from the date the obstacle ended.
