Accident

I was standing on my own , when a vehicle left the high way to come hit me , causing my left hand bone to break , which I did surgery for it and I have iron inside the hand , was told that I would come back a year plus to come take off the iron when the bone has fully healed. The surgery and hospital bill was paid by the person that hit me . Now I am asking for a compensation, they said they won’t give me any compensation and only concentrate on the medical expenses only . What should I do ?
