Neighbors dispute

What can one I do in a case of an unfriendly neighbour who came to our own flat area within the same compound in the name of drying her yam flour, sarcastically talking down on me and my wife. And this led to a serious altercation between me and her but I never laid my hands on her, yet she pushed me, to the extent that I fell on my back to the ground, she kept rough handling me, tore my clothe and even caused my phone screen to spoil. Then, when my wife tried to get her to leave me, she pounced on her too, trying to beat her up but she resisted her and eventually got bitten on one of her hand by my wife, who was struggling from being strangulated by the neighbor. After the whole thing, this neighbor went to the police station to report that her neighbor and his wife and children beat her up. On getting to the police station, the police locked me up (put me in the cell) and refused to listen to our part of the story. The police forced me to pay for the hospital bill, the refund of the money they collected from the woman that came to their station to report to them plus the bail charge. I was treated like a common criminal.
Please, what should my family do to get justice, as it appears the police was compromised?

Firstly, are you on bail? If you are, good. Do you have evidence? Whether videos or a witness aside your wife, who witnessed the incidence. If you do, you can either file a counter complaint at the Police Station or file a Direct Criminal Complaint at the Magistrate's Court through your lawyer or sue her for assault under a civil suit to claim damages. You have as well been taught a lesson. Next time, do not allow such infractions go unreported and always learn to keep documentry evidence.
