If the length of the notice to quit is adequate, then the landlord is right. Otherwise, the notice to quit is defective. Your tenancy agreement should have a provision for length of notice. If it doesn't, or if you have no tenancy agreement, your landlord ought to give you six months' notice which must be calculated to expire when your current rent will expire.
