How to deal with executive that does not communicate?

In Trinidad and Tobago

Last Updated: Dec 18, 2024

I am writing to seek guidance regarding a personal matter involving my father’s estate. My father passed away in Trinidad in February 2023, and I subsequently learned that a friend of his had been appointed executor of his will. The estate is to be divided among myself, the executor, and my father's brother. In December 2023, I traveled to Trinidad, where I uncovered some essential documentation related to the estate. However, several of my father's belongings were missing. In March 2024, I engaged the services of an attorney, who confirmed that the will had not yet been filed for probate. The will I received was inconsistently formatted and contained several handwritten notes that appeared questionable. While my attorney has validated its authenticity, I noted various discrepancies that raised significant concerns. Furthermore, the executor mistakenly identified himself as my father's cousin on the death certificate. As of December 2024, I have not received any communication from the executor regarding the estate. I would greatly appreciate any advice, information, or recommendations for individuals or organizations that could assist me in addressing this situation effectively. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Was the will prepared by a Lawyer or Law Firm in Trinidad and Tobago. If so, you can verify with the Law Firm whether it is an accurate copy of the instructions taken from your father and the Last Will and Testament known to have been executed by him. Further, any amendments to a will have to be done in a particular manner. Having not seen the Will, I am unable to comment on whether the amendments have met the threshold.

Furthermore, you can also conduct a search of the Probate Registry to confirm whether the Probate application was in fact filed and if so, request a copy of the application to see what was placed before the Registry for processing. You indicated you retained local Counsel in Trinidad and Tobago, have you communicated these concerns to Counsel?
