What will help our US Immigration Case

So we got refused under section 221g on 29 March because we didn't know about informing and taking the Death Certificate before the interview. So they told us to contact USCIS, our petitioner Spouse did contact USCIS, and uscis website is saying we received your correspondence on 15 August and after a couple of months, the Visa Status says returned to NVC rather than Refused like before. So my question is where is our case at and will it ever proceed? If will when? And how can we make it done
