Applying for a single residence and work permit

  1. Prepare the employment and identity documents

    Arrange the signed fixed-term employment contract and passport copy. For a first application, include a criminal-record certificate from your country of nationality or usual residence. [1]

  2. Submit the permit application to Migration

    Your employer or its representative files with Migration. If you hold prolonged residence, you may file personally with the employer's signature. In that case, file at least two months before your residence expires. [1]

  3. Respond promptly to document requests

    Watch the correspondence email given in the application. Migration gives seven days to correct missing documents or other defects. Missing that deadline ends the application procedure. [1]

  4. Start the type D visa application if applying from abroad

    Take steps to apply for a type D visa within 20 days of the notice sent to your employer. [1] [8]

  5. Attend Migration within 14 days of entry

    After entry on the type D visa, attend Migration with your employer or its representative within 14 days. Submit the visa-page copy and medical insurance valid locally for at least three months pending the permit. Missing this submission deadline ends the procedure. [1]

  6. Obtain the decision and residence document

    Single-permit decision: within three days of submitting the paragraph 16 documents. [1]

Common questions

Can I apply without leaving if I already have residence permission?

For the single permit, a foreigner already authorised to reside does not have to be outside the country when first applying. Subsequent applications also do not require departure. If you hold prolonged residence, you may file personally, with your employer's signature, at least two months before expiry. [1]

What happens to my single-permit residence if my job ends?

Ending the employment relationship also ends the linked residence right on the same date. Plan any change of employer before ending your current job. [1]

Does permanent residence remove the need for a work permit?

Workers from outside the EU who hold long-term or permanent residence do not need a separate permit for labour-market access. The Act also extends this exemption to their family members. [3]

Can a seasonal worker stay while an extension is pending?

A seasonal worker may stay pending an extension or renewal decision if the application was filed while the permit was valid and the maximum seasonal period has not expired. The permit lasts for the employment contract, subject to a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of nine months in any 12-month period. [1]

Can I apply for the type D visa from a country where I am temporarily staying?

A person legally staying in a third country other than their country of permanent residence may exceptionally apply there after explaining the reasons, if their return to the country of permanent residence is guaranteed. [8]
