Applying for Permanent Residency in Sweden – Work Permit Expiring Soon, What If My Job Title Changes?

En Sweden
Última Actualización: Jan 9, 2026
Hi
I’m currently in Sweden on a work permit that expires on April 2026. I applied for Permanent Residency (PR) today, but according to Migrationsverket, I’ll likely get a decision after my work permit expires.
I have two questions:

If my job title changes after I’ve submitted the PR application, will it affect my PR decision? Do I need to inform Migrationsverket or apply for a new work permit?
If my PR application is denied after April 18, what happens next? How long can I legally stay in Sweden? Do I need to apply for a new work permit, and can I do that from within Sweden?

Any advice or experiences would be really helpful! Thanks in advance.

In Sweden a change of job title after you have lodged a permanent-residence (PR) application does not automatically invalidate the application, but you must inform Migrationsverket of the change because the authorities need to verify that you still meet the employment-condition requirements that formed the basis of your PR claim; if the new position no longer satisfies those requirements you may have to apply for a new work permit (or an amendment) before your current permit expires. If your PR is rejected after 18 April 2026 and your work permit has already lapsed, you must either obtain a new or extended work permit (or another residence permit such as a job-seeker or study permit) to remain lawful; you can submit that application from within Sweden provided you still have a valid residence status at the time of filing, otherwise you would need to leave the country and apply from abroad. In practice, the safest course is to request an extension of your existing work permit as soon as possible (even if only for a short period) while the PR decision is pending, keep Migrationsverket updated on any employment changes, and, if the PR is denied, promptly submit a new permit application to avoid any unlawful stay. Sincerely, A-i-c
