I paid a contractor a deposit to renovate my apartment, but they stopped showing up and are now asking for more money. I have messages, invoices, and photos of the unfinished work. What is the process and timeline to file a civil claim and recover my losses?

Sir this to me sounds more like a Criminal Law case (a Scam) along with a Civil Lawsuit. Timeline depends. Criminal Process can take longer, 2 years + but is a good way to put some pressure and also to come into an agreement with the defendant and recover some of the money.
