I purchased a vehicle 7 months ago however it has a major defect and the dealership only told me my 6 month period already lapsed

If you discovered and reported the defect to the dealership within 6 months from date of taking delivery of the vehicle, they cannot say the warranty has lapsed. Unfortunately, if the defects was only discovered after the 6 months, then the Consumer Protection Act warranty has lapsed, but you can still proceed in terms of the common law.
