The labor laws in Abu Dhabi, UAE govern the relationship between employers and employees, setting forth their rights and obligations. UAE labor laws stipulate that all employment contracts must be written and registered with the Ministry of Human Resources. Regular work hours must not exceed 8 hours per day, or 48 hours per week. Workers are entitled to annual leave of 30 days once they have served a period of one year. In case of termination, unless the worker has committed a gross misconduct, they are entitled to notice and end of service gratuity.
Employment contracts must stipulate the date of employment, nature and place of work, remuneration, date and duration of the contract, and other terms as per the law.
The probationary period allows both the employer and the employee to assess the suitability for the job, and can last up to six months. During this period, contract termination requires only three days’ notice.
Employees who complete one year of service are entitled to 30 days of paid annual leave. If the employment contract is terminated, the employee has the right to cash compensation for accrued leave days.
Upon termination of the contract, an employee who has completed a year of service is eligible to end of service gratuity-a form of severance pay calculated based on the duration of employment.
Labor grievances must first be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. If the ministry cannot resolve it, the matter is referred to the court.
