Joan Mukoya is a practicing Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a Registered Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths with over 8 years experience as a legal practitioner. She holds a Master of Laws (Commercial Law) degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, as well as a Bachelor of Laws degree.

She has worked at two top-tier law firms in Nairobi and as Legal Counsel at a leading investment fund manager investing in Sub-saharan Africa and Latin America (Assets under Management exceeding USD 60M) – where she acted as fund counsel as well as providing legal support to private equity portfolio companies.

She is skilled at commercial law: both non-contentious briefs including tax, business set up, contract drafting, company law, real estate deals, insolvency, employment law and intellectual property registration; as well as dispute resolution. She further does advisory on venture capital financing (that is, debt, mezzanine and equity) and business legal set-up and operations advisory.

She regularly handles legal briefs before various Courts (all levels) and Regulatory Authorities including the Competition Authority and the Kenya Industrial Property Tribunal.

Joan is an Intellectual Property Law practitioner and a registered patent agent in Kenya with registration number 597 at the Kenya Industrial Property Institute.

Joan also deals with family law briefs such as divorce and children’s law and succession law briefs such as wills, inheritance and estate planning.

Joan is fluent in English and Kiswahili.
