Legal Aid Malta Agency, established by Legal Notice 414 of 2014, serves as Malta's primary public defender's office, dedicated to providing professional legal representation to individuals who cannot afford private counsel. Over the years, Legal Aid Malta has significantly enhanced its services and operational capacity. By 2018, the agency's budget increased to €400,000, a substantial rise from €100,000 in 2016, reflecting a concerted effort to improve service delivery. The number of legal aid lawyers expanded to 22 in Malta and five in Gozo, up from 13 in 2017, ensuring greater availability and quality of legal assistance. Additionally, the agency implemented Standard Operating Procedures for legal aid lawyers and legal procurators, detailing expectations and establishing a reporting procedure to regularly update the agency on case statuses.

In its pursuit of accessible justice, Legal Aid Malta has embraced digital advancements to streamline its services. The introduction of the Legal Aid Management System (LAMS) in May 2025 marked a significant step towards more efficient and transparent legal aid processes. This digital platform allows eligible applicants to apply for services online, submit necessary documents, and receive prompt assignment of legal assistance. Such initiatives demonstrate the agency's dedication to adapting to modern needs while maintaining a client-centered approach, ensuring that every individual receives the legal support they require.
