Avani Singh

Avani Singh is an independent legal consultant specialising in media freedom, information law and digital rights. She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and a certified mediator.

She has previously practised as an attorney in the Constitutional Litigation Unit at the Legal Resources Centre and in the Media Law team at Webber Wentzel, as well as having been part of co-founding a tech-law consultancy and law firm. Further to this, she has clerked at the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the International Criminal Court, and serves as a member of several boards and working groups.

Through her career, Avani has represented a range of clients across different fora, including treaty-body and constitutionally-mandated organisations, civil society, tech platforms, educational institutions, media houses, journalists and whistle-blowers. Her experience includes litigation, advocacy and capacity-building, often developed as complimentary strategies to strengthen the matter at hand. Her work in this field over more than a decade is fundamentally underpinned by her recognition of the power of information and the cardinal role this – both on- and offline – in vindicating human rights for all.
