Can I enforce a lease renewal clause in Amman if the landlord now demands a higher rent?

My apartment lease has a renewal clause with a set increase, but the landlord says it’s not valid and wants a much higher rent. I have messages and the signed contract. What steps can I take to enforce the agreed terms and avoid eviction?

Under Jordanian law, a signed lease agreement is legally binding on both parties. If your contract includes a renewal clause with a specified rent increase, the landlord is generally required to respect those agreed terms.

As long as you continue paying the rent according to the contract (including the agreed renewal increase), the landlord cannot legally impose a higher amount than what was agreed, nor can he evict you before the end of the contractual term without a valid legal reason.

If the landlord refuses to comply, you may:

- Continue paying the agreed rent (preferably through traceable payment methods).
- Keep all written communications and evidence.
- If necessary, you may file a complaint with the Governor (Muhafiz) of the area to protect your rights and prevent unlawful action.

However, the exact position may depend on the wording of the renewal clause and the specific circumstances, so a review of the contract would be advisable.

I would be happy to assist you further with reviewing your lease and advising on the appropriate legal steps.

You can enforce your lease renewal clause by:
1) Confirming the clause in your signed lease (amount/percentage and deadlines).
2) Gathering evidence: signed contract + messages with the landlord.
3) Sending a formal written notice to the landlord exercising your renewal right.
4) Continuing to pay the agreed rent; do not pay higher amounts without written agreement.
5) Seeking legal enforcement if the landlord refuses; courts generally honor signed contracts.
This protects your rights and prevents illegal eviction.
