I’m planning to open a small restaurant in Kampala and I’m not sure which licences I need from the city and other authorities. I want to know the steps, estimated fees, and how long approval usually takes.

Opening a small restaurant in Kampala requires approvals from several authorities because food businesses are regulated for hygiene, safety, and taxation.
1) Business registration: You may register a business name (for about 300,000/=) or incorporate a company (for about 1m). The timeline for both is about 3 days.
2) Obtain a trading licence from KCCA. The fees depend on the location of the business (range between 26,000 to 120,000). It takes a day to get one.
3) Healthy inspection and hygiene approval by KCCA. They look at kitchen cleanliness, Waste disposal, Food storage, Water supply, and Toilets and drainage. Your food handlers will also get certificates. It takes about 4 days.
4) Fire and safety clearance for about 50,000/= to 200,000/=
5) Thereafter you register employees with NSSF and URA for PAYE remittances.
