Ask a Lawyer — Legal Q&A

Lawzana's Ask a Lawyer feature lets you post legal questions and get answers from qualified lawyers. It's a great way to get initial guidance before deciding whether to hire a lawyer.

Asking a Question#

How to Post a Question#

  1. Go to the Ask a Lawyer page
  2. Fill in the question form:
    • Your question — Write a clear, specific question about your legal situation
    • Practice area — Select the area of law your question relates to
    • Location — Enter your city or country (laws vary by jurisdiction)
    • Email address — So you can be notified when lawyers respond
    • Do you need an attorney? — Indicate if you're actively looking for legal representation
  3. Click Submit
Tip
Be specific about your location — legal rules differ between countries, states, and even cities. A question about divorce in Texas may get a very different answer than one about divorce in California.

What Makes a Good Question#

  • Be specific — "Can my landlord raise rent mid-lease in New York?" is better than "landlord question"
  • Include relevant details — Mention dates, amounts, and circumstances that are important
  • Focus on one issue — Questions about a single topic get clearer, more helpful answers
  • Avoid sharing personal identifying information — Don't include full names, addresses, or case numbers

Question Review#

After you submit your question, it goes through a brief review process:

  1. Moderation — Your question is reviewed to ensure it's appropriate and clear
  2. Published — Once approved, your question appears publicly in the Q&A directory
  3. Answers — Lawyers can then view and answer your question
Note
Not all questions are published. Questions that are unclear, off-topic, or contain inappropriate content may be declined.

You don't need to post your own question — you can browse existing questions and answers from the Q&A directory.

How to Browse#

  1. Go to Legal Questions from the main navigation
  2. Use the filters to narrow results:
    • By country — See questions relevant to your jurisdiction
    • By practice area — Focus on your area of interest (e.g., Family Law, Employment Law)
  3. Browse the list of questions and click any question to read the full discussion

What You'll See#

Each question page shows:

  • The question — Full title and description
  • Practice area and location tags
  • Answers from lawyers — One or more responses from qualified legal professionals
  • Lawyer name and firm — So you can learn more about the answering lawyer
  • Suggested firms — Related law firms in the question's area and location

Understanding Lawyer Answers#

Answers on Lawzana's Q&A are provided by real lawyers who practice in the relevant area of law. Keep these points in mind:

  • Answers are general guidance — They help you understand your situation but don't replace personalized legal advice
  • Laws vary by location — An answer may not apply to your specific jurisdiction
  • Multiple answers — Some questions receive several answers, giving you different perspectives
  • Quality reviewed — Answers are reviewed for accuracy and helpfulness before being published
Note
Q&A answers on Lawzana do not create an attorney-client relationship. For advice specific to your situation, consult directly with a lawyer.

Finding a Lawyer Through Q&A#

The Q&A section is also a great way to discover lawyers:

  • See which lawyers are knowledgeable in your area of concern
  • Click on a lawyer's name to view their firm profile
  • Use the suggested firms section on each question page to find related law firms nearby
  • If a lawyer's answer resonates with you, reach out to them directly through their profile
