Practices and Services
Practice areas define what types of legal services your firm offers. They determine which searches and leads your firm appears in and help potential clients find you for the right reasons.
Why Practice Areas Matter#
- Directory search — Your firm appears in search results when potential clients search for your practice areas
- Lead matching — Inquiries are distributed based on matching practice areas and locations
- Q&A matching — Legal questions are shown to you based on your practice areas
- Profile visibility — A well-defined set of practice areas helps clients understand your expertise

- The order determines how they appear on your public profile
Practice Areas by Office#
Practice areas are managed per office, not per firm. This allows you to:
- Offer different services at different locations
- Tailor your profile to the local market
- Match leads to the right office based on what services each location provides
For example, your New York office might focus on Corporate Law and Securities, while your Los Angeles office handles Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property.
Available Practice Areas#
Lawzana supports a comprehensive set of legal practice areas. The exact list varies by country and includes categories such as:
- Family Law
- Real Estate & Property
- Criminal Law & Defense
- Corporate & Business Law
- Employment & Labor Law
- Immigration
- Personal Injury
- Estate Planning & Probate
- Intellectual Property
- Tax Law
- Bankruptcy
- Civil Litigation
- Environmental Law
- Healthcare Law
- And many more
Each parent practice area may have more specific sub-services for granular matching.
Best Practices#
- Be specific — Only list practice areas you actively handle. Listing areas you don't practice in leads to irrelevant leads and poor client experiences.
- Add descriptions — A description of your specific expertise within each practice area helps you stand out.
- Keep it updated — Add new practice areas as your firm expands services, and remove ones you no longer offer.
- Use sub-services — Sub-services help with more precise lead matching.
