We think it is important that citizens are entitled to proper legal protection against the powerful government, such as the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Especially when fundamental human rights, such as the right to exercise family life and the right of the child to be cared for and raised by both parents, are threatened. The restrictive national immigration law (particularly in the field of family reunification) may in some cases conflict with treaties, such as the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the International Convention on the Child (CRC) and European directives, such as the family reunification directive (2003/86/EC).
